KIDNEY (Newborn) - infarction

Description
The specimen shows both kidneys, ureters and the bladder. The left kidney is swollen and dark with infiltrated blood. The adrenal gland does not appear to be affected. The inferior vena cava is occupied by bloodclot but this is postmortem in origin.
History
This child was stillborn at 32 weeks; foetal death had probably occurred some 8 days before. the mother's blood pressure was mildly elevated and she had some ankle oedema. The foetus weighed 1530 g.
